The First to Fly: Scientific Research and Experimentation Leading to the Events of 17 December 1903

A public lecture by Simine Short, scientist and author.

Bayley Auditorium, Barbara Deer Kuss Science Center, Wittenberg University (corner of Bill Edwards Drive and North Plum Street)

It has been said that "To fly is a dream of mankind." Hear an in-depth lecture on the design process of Octave Chanute, president of the Western Society of Engineers, whose biplane glider changed the possibilities of aviation.

The beginning of the twentieth century was a time of innovation and spirit of discovery. Not only was Frank Lloyd Wright designing his revolutionary houses, but also were people such as Octave Chanute and the Wright Brothers paving the way for today's understanding of aerospace.

Presentation of the lecture, "The First To Fly," coincides with the NASA aerospace design exhibit at the Springfield Museum of Art, November 11 - December 16, 2006.
