Greenmount Avenue

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Westcott House is located on the corner of East High Street and South Greenmount Avenue. While East High Street has experienced an expansive revitalization over the past 15 years, South Greenmount shows many years of degradation and disrepair. The Westcott House Foundation purchased seven houses along South Greenmount with hope of creating a revenue generating complex to supplement the operations and programs of the Westcott House.

The properties along South Greenmount Street stretch from the Westcott House lot to US 40, the old National Road. All the houses were built between late 1860s and 1920. The opposite side of the street is the 19th-century Greenmount Cemetery that provides a picturesque setting for the neighborhood. The site is directly tied to a National Heritage Corridor, therefore have a potential to contribute to Heritage tourism industry and affect the economic growth of our community. The Westcott House Foundation has a unique chance to control the growth of its neighborhood.

19th Century vernacular houses have been acquired by the foundation in 2001-02.The potential use of the site has been speculated by many. The houses have been vacant and subject to potential crime and further degradation.

The viability of the potential use and the financial resources are yet to be addressed and thoroughly researched through a feasibility study. The overarching goal of the study is to identify solutions that do not compromise the financial stability of the Westcott House.
