A house is a container of memories. In this workshop, participants create simple small sculptures that resemble imaginary rooms using wood and paper. In designing and making sculptures, we will explore notions of refuge, nest, habitat, and the intersection of memory and place. This workshop is fun and imaginative, and intended for participants on multiple levels, as each person will build on their individual skill set for making sculpture. All materials/tools will be provided. Participants will also learn about Ma--a little known concept of Japanese aesthetics. Ma is a Japanese spatial aesthetic principle, meaning “emptiness” or “absence.” It is the space between objects, the silence between sounds, or the stillness between movements.

Instructor: Migiwa Orimo is a Tokyo-born, Yellow Springs-based installation artist. A five-time recipient of the Ohio Arts Council Individual Artists Fellowship/Individual Creativity Excellence Award for her interdisciplinary art projects, she was awarded residencies at the Headlands Art Center in 2012 and SPACES Gallery's SPACES World Artist Project in 2014. Her work has been shown extensively, including at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington DC; San Bernardino Art Museum, CA; UNC-Chapel Hill's Allcott Gallery (NC), apexart (NYC); and in Ohio, the Springfield Art Museum, Dayton Art Institute, OSU's Urban Arts Space, Riffe Gallery (Columbus), Oberlin College's Baron Gallery, and Weston Art Gallery (Cincinnati).

Who Should Attend: We are offering this class to adults and students age 13 and above. Whether you are an artist or an individual interested in expanding your creativity this workshop is for you! We encourage adults of any age, as well as high school students to attend.

This program is part of Westcott Design Hub, a design education initiative generously supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, Ohio Arts Council, Turner Foundation, and the Springfield Foundation. Your tuition directly supports a portion of the artist fee, supplies and lunch costs.
