Westcott House was saved through the cooperative efforts of the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy, the Turner Foundation and the Westcott House Foundation, a non-profit that continues to operate the house to this day. Over 600 volunteers, craftsmen, supporters, and professionals with incredible expertise and commitment came together to save this landmark.
Currently, over 100 volunteers continue to help run the museum, including guiding tours, managing the gift shop, doing research and also governing the organization through board service. Over the last 20 years, many people in this region developed much appreciation for this landmark. As board members, docents, volunteers, donors, members, program participants and instructors, many have established a deep personal connection to our site. This house thrives because of all the people who care deeply and passionately about what this iconic building represents.
For two decades Westcott team has been working to serve and transform the regional community through education workshops, summer camps, community tours, and public art. At the same time, the house attracted tens of thousands of curious people from across the world to visit this architectural gem.
A recent virtual tour celebrating this anniversary has attracted attendees from coast to coast in the United States and Canada! We asked them a question – why should we save places like the Westcott House?
Amy said, “When humans make a big change in thinking, like Wright did, it is enriching for us all to be able to walk in those shoes and see through their eyes by experiencing the artifact - the house.”
Eric reflected, “I think it’s essential to preserve works like the Westcott House for numerous reasons. Wright is so iconic and his many surviving projects likely resonate with the human spirit even more today than they had when they’d been first built. Architecture is an artform that’s experienced in way that’s unlike any other. The works like the Westcott exist to inspire the Wrights of tomorrow.”
Comments like these reaffirm the importance of our work. Frank Lloyd Wright and the Westcott family gave us a gift of a universal value… and we are gladly carrying on the responsibility of sharing it with the world.
This season, please consider making a gift to our Annual Fund – your support is critically important to our work. Also, please consider participating in some of our 20th anniversary programs and events - we look forward to connecting and celebrating!
