In 1919, following the success of the original Ridgewood subdivision, Harry Kissell platted and developed “The Woods” behind the Pythian Home. With its winding streets and majestic old-growth trees, this area quickly became one of Springfield’s most fashionable residential districts. However, it was also one of the first neighborhoods to prohibit Black home ownership and occupancy, a practice that continued well into the 1960s. Join us as we explore this neighborhood’s fraught history and hopeful future. Meet outside 20 Brighton Road.
Join the Westcott Center for Architecture + Design as we celebrate our region’s distinctive architecture and history with our annual Summer Tour Series.
The Summer Tour Series, now in its twenty-first year, examines the architecture, design, and history of the built environment in the Greater Springfield Region. Historians, curators, artists, designers, and other local professionals guide each tour. The 2025 series includes Walking Tours, Happy Hour Tours, Family Tours, Members Only Tours, and Virtual Tours.
Please be advised that we do not mail tickets. You will receive an order confirmation by email. You will be automatically added to the attendee list upon the completion of your order.
