Mother, Meet Mr. Froebel! Tuesday, October 22nd from 5:30 to 7pm at Mother Stewart's Brewery. $10 Westcott Member. $15 Non-Member. A Pint and Supplies Included. Program for All Ages. Pint for Adults (21+).

Join us at the Mother Stewart's Brewery for a fun evening of hands-on demonstrations. It is quite fitting that in October we paired great beer with the fascinating world of Friedrich Froebel, the German educator and inventor of Kindergarten. Developed in the early 1800s, the Froebel Gifts appear deceptively simple, but they represent a sophisticated approach to nurturing abstract thinking. Over the last 180 years, Froebel's philosophy had a widespread impact, becoming interwoven with the history of art, design, education and popular culture. For example, the gifts were purchased for Frank Lloyd Wright by his mother after she discovered them at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876. The gifts had a profound impact on the Westcott House’s famed architect, greatly influencing his philosophy and approach to design. Experience for yourself how Froebel Gifts bring joy and creativity to the learning process at any age.

Memories of Lived Spaces: Making a Small Room Sculpture. Sunday, November 17th from 10am to 2pm at the Solar House. $25 Westcott Member. $35 Non-Member. Lunch Included. Program for Adult Learners (21+).

A house is a container of memories. In this workshop, participants create simple small sculptures that resemble imaginary rooms using wood and paper. In designing and making sculptures, we will explore notions of refuge, nest, habitat, and the intersection of memory and place. This workshop is fun and imaginative, and intended for participants on multiple levels, as each person will build on their individual skill set for making sculpture. All materials/tools will be provided. Participants will also learn about Ma--a little known concept of Japanese aesthetics. Ma is a Japanese spatial aesthetic principle, meaning “emptiness” or “absence.” It is the space between objects, the silence between sounds, or the stillness between movements.

Wine + Design. Tuesday, November 19th from 5:30 to 7pm at the Solar House. $25 Westcott Member. $35 Non-Member. Wine and Light Hors D'oeuvres Included. Program for Adult Learners (21+).

The premise for this program is simple – each participant will be presented with a set of LEGO, a glass of wine and a fun design challenge! The workshop will be facilitated and judged by a team of Miami University architecture students and John M. Reynolds, MU Professor of Architecture.
